The Mental Health Authority says its national helpline is receiving a growing number of calls from all 16 regions, with issues ranging from depression and anxiety to gambling and suicidal thoughts.
Speaking in an interview with Adom News, Deputy Head of Communications Dr. Josephine Stiles Darko explained that the helpline has become an effective resource for people in need of mental health support.
“We get calls on depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and even help on how to stop gambling,” she said. “It’s a helpline that’s being used effectively—not just for suicide prevention, but for broader mental health issues.”
However, Dr. Darko highlighted a recurring challenge: people calling to request financial assistance.
“We continue to urge the public to refrain from using the helpline for monetary support. It is strictly dedicated to addressing mental health concerns,” she stated.
She added that the Authority also follows up on cases to ensure callers are getting the help they need.
“Last year, we recorded more than 300 calls. Thanks to increased public education and awareness, more people now feel comfortable reaching out,” she said.
Dr. Darko encouraged anyone experiencing mental distress to call the toll-free helpline—0800 678 678—for immediate assistance.
