The Minerals Development Fund (MDF) has dismissed media reports claiming that 33 excavators went missing from police custody in Akomfre, describing the reports as inaccurate and misleading.
In a statement issued on July 3, 2025, the MDF clarified that no excavators were ever in police custody and stated that only seven machines found at the site were officially seized by law enforcement.
According to the MDF, its team discovered approximately 40 excavators during a visit to an illegal mining site in Akomfre on June 5, 2025. However, due to limited manpower, the team halted operations and contacted the police for formal seizure.
By the time officers arrived the following morning, 33 of the excavators had already been moved from the site.
“This incident underscores the importance of our direct community engagement model, which enabled us to expose this illegal operation,” the statement said.
The MDF reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and assured the public of its continued collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, which is currently investigating the matter.
It also urged the media to verify facts before publication to prevent the spread of misinformation.
