May Allah grant Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Muniru Paradise – Mahama

President John Mahama has offered heartfelt prayers for the late Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, two government officials who perished in the tragic helicopter crash on August 6.

Speaking at their burial on Sunday, August 10, at the Tse Addo Military Cemetery, the President said:

“Today is not a day for talking, and I find it very difficult to find words. I simply say thank you, and may God grant them Paradise. May their memory guide us too.”

The Ghana Air Force helicopter crash, which occurred in the Adansi-Akrofuom District, claimed eight lives, including the two senior officials.

Earlier on Sunday, their remains were brought to the forecourt of the State House, where Islamic prayers were performed before burial in line with Muslim tradition.

President Mahama expressed gratitude to the bereaved families for their patience in allowing official arrangements to be made.

“We recognise that in Islam, burial is meant to be swift after death. We appreciate the understanding shown by the families,” he said.

Quoting the Qur’an, the President reminded mourners of the blessings associated with attending funerals:

“Indeed, the Qur’an tells us that whoever attends a funeral and stays until its conclusion receives a blessing.”

He pledged to honour the memory of the late officials by continuing the government’s “reset agenda.”

“I believe they would have wanted us to continue the hard work we were doing together. In their memory, we will work tirelessly to serve the people of Ghana and ensure the success of our reset agenda, so their names will be written in gold in Paradise.”

Reflecting on their personal bond, President Mahama described the loss as deeply personal.

“Muniru and Murtala were both close to me. I mentored Murtala when he was a new MP for Nanton—he was one of our brightest minds in Parliament. Muniru was like a younger brother and a permanent fixture in my home. This is a very deep personal loss.”

“By Allah’s grace, may He receive them into Jannat al-Firdaus,” the President added.
