The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, has revealed that a number of recruits have been kicked out of security services training institutions after investigations uncovered forged and altered WASSCE results submitted during their admission process.
According to the Minister, the fraud came to light when the certificates and results slips presented by prospective recruits were subjected to verification by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
He said the government would take further steps against individuals found to have falsified their academic records, including placing them on a red list to prevent them from securing future opportunities within the country’s security services.
Some of those implicated could also face prosecution, he warned.
Alhaji Muntaka made the disclosure while speaking at a ceremony to commission newly constructed classroom facilities at the Asokore Mampong Roman Catholic School.
He expressed disbelief that individuals seeking careers in institutions responsible for national security would attempt to gain entry using fraudulent academic credentials.
“It’s so shocking that a lot of people forged their results. I don’t know how they think that they will be employed in the Police, Prisons, Immigration, Fire Service, Narcotics Control Commission, or Armed Forces, and the certificate you present won’t be checked,” he said.
The Minister said the verification exercise had already resulted in the removal of several recruits from training.
“As we speak, many have been dismissed from the training because they have doctored their results slips,” he added.
He urged prospective applicants to be truthful about their academic qualifications and ensure they satisfy the minimum requirements before submitting applications to join any of the security services.
The Minister’s disclosure highlights the government’s increased scrutiny of academic credentials in security service recruitment, as authorities seek to prevent individuals who use fraudulent documents from entering the institutions.
