Manhyia South Member of Parliament (MP), Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has called on the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to immediately suspend the implementation of the 14.75% electricity tariff increment.
Mr. Baffour Awuah criticised the adjustment as unfair and burdensome on consumers amidst the ongoing unstable power supply in the country.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the MP suggested that the increment be put on hold until electricity supply is stabilised across the country.
“ECG is not running a charity, likewise the citizens. ECG supplies electricity at a cost, and so it is wrong for Ghanaians to be charged when there is no supply. When there is an outage, people need to pay extra for fuel to power their generators, which is burdensome,” he stated.
The lawmaker emphasized that the PURC must strike a balance between sustaining utility providers and protecting consumers.
“Although we have PURC as a regulator, it seems they prioritise only the interests of ECG and NEDCo, but not the consumers,” he lamented.
In addition to the suspension, Mr. Baffour Awuah is demanding a load-shedding timetable from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to help consumers plan their lives.
The Commission, on Friday, April 11, 2025, announced that electricity and water tariffs would rise by 14.75% and 4.02% respectively, effective May 3.
The PURC attributed the adjustment to fluctuations in the exchange rate, rising domestic inflation, the cost of natural gas, and shifts in the electricity generation mix.
However, the announcement has sparked public backlash, with many Ghanaians questioning the fairness of the tariff hikes amid what they describe as unreliable and inconsistent utility services.
