A 22-year-old man, Jebril Hamidu, has been found dead after reportedly drowning in an abandoned galamsey pit at Juaboso in the Western North Region.

According to police reports, Jebril’s relatives reported him missing on May 31, 2025, after he left home around 2:00 am to search for gold but failed to return.

In response, the police launched a search operation that lasted several hours. The team later discovered his body in an abandoned mining pit covered with grass.

The body, which was in a decomposing state, was found alongside a gold detector machine believed to belong to the deceased. A waist bag retrieved from the scene contained a mobile phone and GH¢250 in cash.

Police indicated there were no signs of external injuries, and all body parts were intact.

The remains have since been transported to the Juaboso Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Residents noted that heavy rainfall the night before had caused flooding in the area. It is suspected that Jebril may have accidentally fallen into the water-filled pit and drowned.

Police say investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death.
