The Member of Parliament for Adansi Akrofuom, Joseph Azumah, has expressed confidence that President John Dramani Mahama will sign the LGBTQ Bill when it is duly passed by Parliament.
Speaking on Accra-based UTV Ghana, he said although the President has indicated that the bill is not currently a top priority, it does not mean he will refuse to assent to it once it completes the necessary legislative processes.
According to him, the President had already made his position known during his campaign and has consistently demonstrated his opposition to LGBTQ activities.
He pointed to the recent controversy involving Lincoln University, where an honorary doctorate awarded to the President was withdrawn, as evidence of his firm stance on the issue.
Mr Azumah added that the President’s position has also been acknowledged and commended by religious bodies such as the Christian Council of Ghana and the Assemblies of God Ghana.
He further explained that governance involves setting priorities, noting that while the LGBTQ Bill may not be at the top of the government’s agenda, it remains an important issue.
He stressed that in a scale of national priorities, multiple pressing concerns exist, but that does not diminish the relevance of the bill.
Mr Azumah therefore assured Ghanaians that once Parliament completes its work and presents the bill to the President, there is every indication that he will sign it.
