President John Dramani Mahama has commended progress on the Ofankor-Nsawam Road, urging the contractor to accelerate work and complete the project months ahead of schedule.
The President made the remarks during a site visit on Wednesday, December 3, exactly 90 days after his previous inspection.
He recalled the road’s poor state at that time, attributing delays to unpaid contractor bills and stalled demolitions.
“When we came, the road was moving at a snail’s pace… one major issue was non-payment for work done over a long period, so I directed the Roads and Finance Ministers to ensure payments were made. More than $70 million has now been paid to the contractor,” he noted.
Mahama said that while the initial completion date was set for July 2026, current progress points to a possible early finish by April 2026. He encouraged the team to sustain the momentum.
“I am impressed with the progress and urge the contractor to keep pushing. If we maintain this pace, the road can be completed and opened for use sooner,” he added.
The Ofankor-Nsawam Road, which began reconstruction in July 2022, has long been a source of frustration for commuters due to chronic traffic and repeated delays caused by funding gaps. The ongoing works are part of broader efforts to reduce congestion on one of Accra’s busiest corridors.
