Mahama urges Black Queens to aim for gold before end of his term

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence in the Black Queens, encouraging them to strive for a gold medal before the end of his presidential term.

Speaking at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, President Mahama and Vice President Jane Nana Opoku Agyemang hosted the senior women’s national team following their bronze medal achievement at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

“The Vice President, Jane Nana Opoku Agyemang, and I are happy to receive you. We followed your games very keenly—especially Nana Jane, who was your chief supporter. Your style of play was fantastic,” President Mahama said.

He praised the team’s resilience, particularly during their semi-final clash with host nation Morocco, which Ghana narrowly lost on penalties.

“It was just unfortunate that you came up against the host nation at a very critical time. Playing against a home team is never easy, but you held them throughout,” he added.

Despite falling short of the final, President Mahama remained optimistic about the team’s future.

“It was only the penalties that let us down. So all is not lost. Your best days are still ahead of you,” he said.

He also pledged the government’s unwavering support and announced plans to establish a dedicated fund for sports development to address recurring challenges in funding and logistics.

“We’ll work to secure dedicated funding for sports so that issues with financing, team travel, and payment of allowances become a thing of the past,” he assured.

President Mahama concluded with a message of pride and hope:
“On behalf of myself and Jane, I want to congratulate you and thank you for the good job you did. We’ll keep watching your progress, and I’m sure that in the not-too-distant future, we’ll see you return here with something better than bronze—maybe silver, or even gold.”

With a smile, he added: “I’m an optimist. I know I’ll see you here before I leave office as President—with a gold medal.”
