Mahama secures additional 200 million RMB Chinese grant for Aflao Market and National Theatre

Ghana has secured an additional grant of 200 million RMB from China to support key development projects, following bilateral talks between President John Dramani Mahama and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

The new commitment brings China’s total grant to 400 million RMB, with the funds earmarked for the construction of the proposed Aflao Market and the renovation of the National Theatre in Accra.

President Mahama described the Aflao Market project as a significant step in boosting cross-border trade between Ghana and Togo, noting that it will serve as “an important trading platform and a cornerstone of our #ResettingGhana Agenda.”

During the discussions, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening Ghana–China relations through economic cooperation, trade, and sustainable development initiatives. President Mahama revealed that Ghana expects to finalise the Zero Tariff Policy with China by the end of October, a move that is expected to ease trade flows and improve market access for Ghanaian products.

Talks also centred on responsible small-scale mining, with both sides agreeing to work together to promote environmentally sound and regulated mining practices.

According to President Mahama, China expressed strong interest in Ghana’s 24-hour economy initiative and Green Transition policy, viewing both as opportunities for expanded partnership in energy, technology, and industrial development.

“China is excited about Ghana’s 24-hour economy initiative and Green Transition policy and is positioning itself to partner with government and our business sector,” President Mahama noted.

He further reaffirmed Ghana’s support for the One China Policy and pledged continued collaboration towards President Xi’s vision for a new global system of governance that promotes equity and shared prosperity.

President Mahama’s visit marks a renewed phase in Ghana–China cooperation, with both countries outlining plans for future collaboration in infrastructure, manufacturing, and sustainable development.
