President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that Cabinet is reviewing Ghana’s current television licence system and will submit proposed legal amendments to Parliament after internal consultations are concluded.
He made this known during a visit to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) on Thursday, January 8, as part of his engagements with key state institutions.
According to the President, government is considering replacing the existing television licence regime with a broader public media levy to provide more sustainable financial support for public broadcasters.
“There are a few suggestions we have concerning the so-called TV licence,” President Mahama said. “Our thinking is moving in the direction of amending the law to make it a public media levy of some sort.”
He explained that the proposed approach is expected to enhance revenue mobilisation and ensure stable funding for public media organisations, including GBC.
President Mahama noted that Cabinet will finalise its discussions before the proposals are shared with stakeholders and subsequently presented to Parliament for consideration.
“When we’re ready, we’ll discuss it at Cabinet, but we will engage you on our thinking before we finally go to Parliament to amend the law,” he stated.
He expressed confidence that the reforms will strengthen the financial base of public broadcasters and enable them to carry out their mandate more effectively.
“I’m sure that with some of the suggestions we’ve received, you will be able to increase funding and be better resourced to do your work,” the President added.
