Mahama renews call for justice over 2024 election violence

President John Dramani Mahama has strongly condemned the acts of violence that marred the 2024 general elections and renewed his call for accountability and justice for the victims.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Post-Election Conference organised by the National Peace Council in Koforidua, Eastern Region, President Mahama stressed the need to prosecute perpetrators and compensate victims and their families.

He revealed that the Attorney General is finalising a report to be presented to Cabinet to facilitate the payment of adequate compensation to those affected by the violence during the December 2024 polls.

The former president reminded the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of his earlier request for thorough investigations into the violent incidents recorded in certain constituencies. He urged the Ghana Police Service to expedite these investigations to restore public trust in the electoral process.

“Political differences must never be a reason for violence. We all have a collective responsibility to protect public peace and security,” Mahama emphasised.

The Post-Election Conference, themed “Dialoguing for a Stronger Democracy and Social Cohesion”, was co-funded by the European Union, the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The event brought together key stakeholders to assess the 2024 elections and recommend measures to strengthen Ghana’s democracy.

President Mahama commended the National Peace Council for its role in promoting peace but urged greater stakeholder interest in the Electoral Commission’s operations to ensure future polls are free of violence.

He called on all political actors and civil society organisations to work collaboratively to safeguard Ghana’s democratic gains and prevent a recurrence of electoral violence.
