Mahama launches Fund for Children of Helicopter crash victims

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the creation of a Children’s Support Fund to provide long-term care for the children of the eight victims of the August 6 helicopter crash.

The president said Stanbic Bank has kickstarted the initiative with a GHC500,000 seed contribution.

The fund will cover beneficiaries’ education from primary school to university or technical training, as well as healthcare, welfare, clothing, shelter, and specialised living expenses.

Speaking at the funeral for six of the victims at Independence Square on Friday, August 15, President Mahama described the tragedy as one that “has cast its shadow over the heart of Ghana.”

He pledged that the fund would be sustained through annual public reporting and would be open to contributions from the public and international partners.

“The government will make an immediate seed contribution and publish the detailed operational framework of the Children’s Support Fund within the next 30 days,” he stated.

Two of the victims — Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed — were buried on August 10. The other six — Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Samuel Aboagye, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah — were laid to rest on August 15.
