Mahama, Julius Debrah break down at wreath-laying ceremony for helicopter crash victims [Video]

President John Mahama and Chief of Staff Julius Debrah were visibly emotional during a solemn wreath-laying ceremony held at Jubilee House on Thursday, August 6, as the nation continues to mourn the tragic loss of eight lives in the recent military helicopter crash.

The ceremony, held at the Ceremonial Garden in front of the Presidency, formed part of the government’s three-day national mourning declared in honour of the victims.

The event drew top government officials, bereaved families, military personnel, and ordinary citizens, all united in grief and reflection.

President Mahama and Mr. Debrah, who had worked closely with several of the deceased—including the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah—struggled to contain their emotions. As Mahama’s tears flowed, Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, herself visibly somber, was seen handing him a handkerchief in a moving moment of solidarity.

Other victims honoured during the ceremony included:

  • Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology

  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC

  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

  • Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary aspirant

  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala

  • Flying Officer Twum Ampadu

  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

The memorial featured candle lighting, moments of silent reflection, and tributes pouring in from across Ghana and beyond, underscoring the national significance of the tragedy.
