Mahama declares three days of national mourning in honour of helicopter crash victims 

President John Dramani Mahama has suspended all official duties for the rest of the week, following the fatal military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The accident claimed the lives of two senior Cabinet Ministers, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who also served as Member of Parliament for Tamale Central.

Also among the deceased were Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three members of the Ghana Air Force — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

A statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed the President’s decision and declared a three-day national mourning period starting Thursday, August 7.

“In light of Wednesday’s tragic incident involving the loss of eight lives in a helicopter crash, President Mahama has suspended all his activities and engagements for the rest of the week,” the statement said.

The government has also ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast across the country as a mark of respect.

The helicopter was on an official trip to Obuasi when it lost contact and crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are currently ongoing.
