Commuters and traders in the Upper West Region can look forward to improved road access as former President John Dramani Mahama has officially broken ground for the Wa-Han-Tumu-Navrongo road project, a flagship initiative under his government’s ‘Big Push’ infrastructure development programme.
The project aims to enhance connectivity between Wa, Han, Tumu, and Navrongo, linking Ghana’s northern corridor to neighboring countries such as Burkina Faso.
President Mahama said the road will not only improve transportation but also boost trade and promote regional integration.
The Wa Big Push Project involves the redevelopment and upgrading of over 260 kilometres of roads in the Upper West Region, including key highways and intercity routes. It is designed to improve travel safety, reduce transport costs, and stimulate local economic growth.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony in Guli, a suburb of Wa, President Mahama described the project as “a new dawn of hope” for residents who have long struggled with poor road infrastructure.
“This project will make travel across the Upper West Region safer, faster, and more convenient. It’s about giving our people the dignity and opportunity they deserve,” he stated.
He assured residents that strict monitoring systems have been established to ensure contractors complete the work on schedule and uphold quality standards.
Mahama also called for cooperation among community members, traditional leaders, and local authorities to facilitate smooth implementation.
“We have put in place mechanisms to ensure that this project is delivered on time and according to plan. It will open up Wa, Han, and Tumu to new opportunities and growth,” he emphasized.
The former president further outlined his broader vision to transform the Northern transport corridor, highlighting that improved road infrastructure is key to boosting agriculture, healthcare access, and trade.
“Our priority is to connect the north to major produce markets and ensure that our people can move their goods easily. This is part of a larger plan to stimulate development and bridge the gap between regions,” he added.
The Wa-Han-Tumu-Navrongo Road Project forms part of Mahama’s renewed agenda to strengthen Ghana’s infrastructure backbone through targeted investments under the ‘Big Push’ initiative.
