President John Mahama has confirmed that officials involved in the 2023 All-African Games scandal have been summoned and interrogated.
The Games, held in Accra in March 2024, attracted widespread criticism following reports that $245 million was spent on organizing the event.
Additionally, $15 million was allegedly allocated for the feeding of athletes and officials, while $4.5 million went towards the management system and accreditation tags.
During his Wednesday night address outlining his administration’s first 120-day social contract with Ghanaians, President Mahama stressed his commitment to fighting corruption and promoting accountability.
“A cornerstone of our commitment to good governance and accountability is tackling corruption and eliminating waste,” he stated.
“I promised to initiate inquiries and forensic audits into several critical matters of public interest. This war against corruption continues unabated. A number of officials have been invited and questioned concerning the 13th African Games.”
Earlier in April, former Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif was reportedly questioned by the National Investigation Bureau. However, it remains unclear whether that interrogation was directly related to the African Games expenditure.
