President John Dramani Mahama has strongly condemned the latest outbreak of violence in Bawku, describing it as a deliberate attempt by certain individuals to undermine ongoing efforts to restore lasting peace in the area.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Overlord of Gonjaland, His Royal Majesty Yagbonwura BII-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, at the Jubilee House, President Mahama expressed deep concern over the impact of the conflict on education and essential public services.
“We cannot accept the current situation in Bawku where students are being shot and killed in school. We cannot accept a situation where teachers and public servants flee for their lives,” the President said.
He revealed that government had entrusted the peace mediation process to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who has been providing consistent updates and making notable progress.
“The Asantehene has been regularly briefing me on the mediation efforts, and we are very close to achieving a resolution,” President Mahama stated.
He, however, lamented that the latest wave of violence appears to be orchestrated by those determined to sabotage the mediation process.
“The ongoing fighting and killings can only be the work of individuals who want to derail the peace efforts,” he added.
