Mahama commends Black Queens after 2024 WAFCON bronze finish

President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Black Queens for their outstanding performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they secured a third-place finish.

The senior women’s national team earned Ghana’s first WAFCON bronze medal since 2016 after defeating South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in a tense penalty shootout.

During a courtesy call by the team at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, President Mahama praised the players and technical staff for their resilience and determination throughout the tournament. He encouraged them to build on the experience and aim higher in the future.

“All is not lost yet. Your best days are still ahead of you. There are many more games to play, and I believe this experience will serve as part of your growth and preparation to reach greater heights. We will continue to support you,” he said.

The Black Queens had a tough start to the tournament, losing their opening game to South Africa and drawing their second against Mali. However, they bounced back with a decisive win over Tanzania in their final Group C match to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Ghana went on to defeat Algeria in the last eight but fell to hosts Morocco in the semifinals. In the third-place playoff, the team edged South Africa on penalties to claim the bronze medal.

Earlier on Tuesday, Members of Parliament also honoured the Black Queens for their achievement at the continental competition.
