President John Dramani Mahama has called for the immediate prosecution and imprisonment of individuals found guilty of misappropriating public funds exposed during Public Accounts Committee (PAC) hearings.
Speaking at the 12th Annual Conference of Chairpersons of Governing Boards, Councils, and Chief Executives of the Public Services of Ghana in Ho, the President stressed that fast-tracking such cases would serve as a strong deterrent against future financial misconduct in the public sector.
He announced plans to introduce constitutional provisions to establish a committee tasked with implementing the Auditor-General’s recommendations, ensuring greater accountability in the management of public resources.
“Recently, I’ve been watching the Public Accounts Committee, and it’s so pathetic. Every year, we hear of reckless handling of public funds and resources. I have scheduled a meeting with the Chief Justice, the Attorney General, and others to find a lasting solution to this issue. Those found guilty of financial infractions must face a fast-track process,” President Mahama said.
The President also urged public sector institutions to adopt Human Resource Management Information Systems (HRMIS) to improve efficiency, transparency, and accountability.
Additionally, he revealed that the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill has been submitted to Parliament for consideration and encouraged public institutions to align their operations with the government’s 24-hour economy initiative to drive productivity and job creation.
