President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Luanda, Angola, ahead of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government, which is expected to focus on strengthening Africa’s capacity to prevent and resolve conflicts.
The summit, scheduled for Sunday, August 30, is being hosted by Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, who serves as the AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa.
Central to the discussions will be the proposed adoption of a comprehensive Decision, Action Plan and Implementation Matrix on Conflict Prevention and Resolution.
African leaders are also expected to examine the effectiveness of existing continental peace and security mechanisms and identify ways to improve coordination, response, implementation and funding under the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) and the African Governance Architecture (AGA).
The extraordinary meeting comes as several regions of Africa continue to grapple with security and political challenges, including conflicts in Sudan and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, instability across the Sahel and the Horn of Africa, and the ongoing insurgency in northern Mozambique.
President Mahama and other heads of state are expected to explore practical measures to strengthen regional stability and enhance Africa’s collective ability to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts.
The session forms part of the AU’s broader efforts to reinforce African-led approaches to peacebuilding, conflict prevention and sustainable security on the continent.
