Local Gov’t introduces monthly National Sanitation Day on first Saturdays

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has designated 6th September as National Sanitation Day under the Clean-Up Ghana Agenda.

Announcing the initiative at a press briefing, Minister Ahmed Ibrahim said the nationwide exercise will take place on the first Saturday of every month across all 16 regions.

He explained that the programme will serve as a key performance indicator (KPI) for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), with top performers rewarded and underperforming officials risking removal from office.

To support the effort, the government has released the MMDCEs’ common fund to finance cleanup operations. Additionally, a call center has been established for citizens to report waste management issues, and motorcycles have been provided for patrols to ensure compliance.

The Dean of Municipal Chief Executives, John Desmond Sowah Nai, also assured readiness to maintain a clean environment nationwide.
