Ghanaians will today, Friday, 28 November, gather at Black Star Square for the state funeral of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
The state-assisted ceremony will bring together government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, traditional leaders, political figures, and the general public to honour the life and legacy of the former First Lady, who played a defining role in Ghana’s political and social transformation.
Final arrangements for the funeral were completed on Thursday, November 27.
The national farewell follows a requiem mass held on Wednesday at Accra Ridge Church, where family, friends, and dignitaries paid tribute to her enduring contributions to Ghana’s political and social development.
Her family expressed profound gratitude to Ghanaians for the outpouring of support since her passing on Thursday, 23 October 2025.
Nana Konadu, founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, is remembered as a transformative figure whose activism and tireless advocacy shaped Ghana’s gender and social development agenda. She has been hailed in public tributes as “a national treasure,” “an indomitable spirit,” and “a beacon of women’s empowerment.” Switzerland’s Ambassador to Ghana, Simone Giger, praised her “determination and dedication to women’s rights.”
Beyond public service, Nana Konadu was celebrated for her vibrant love of fashion, music, dance, and the creative arts. Her elegance and confidence made her a lasting symbol of Ghanaian cultural pride.
Born on 17 November 1948 in Cape Coast to J.O.T. Agyeman and Felicia Agyeman, she grew up in an environment shaped by discipline, ambition, and leadership.
She attended Achimota School before studying Arts with a focus on Textile Design at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where she served as Deputy SRC Secretary and later SRC Secretary. She was also actively involved with the National Union of Ghana Students.
