A lecturer and programme manager at the Pentecost University, Dr. Frank Antwi, has urged government to adopt a non-partisan approach in awarding contracts under the Big Push infrastructure programme.

Speaking on Accra-based UTV Ghana, he acknowledged that the initiative to support local contractors is commendable, especially since foreign firms often repatriate profits to their home countries.

However, he stressed that contracts must be awarded strictly based on competence and capacity, rather than political affiliations or favoritism.

“Government must remain non-partisan in awarding contracts under the Big Push programme and ensure that only competent contractors with the necessary resources are selected to deliver value for money,” he said.

According to him, one of the key concerns in public procurement is the tendency to award contracts to individuals or companies that may not be qualified, simply due to political connections.

He emphasized that both local and foreign contractors must be subjected to proper scrutiny to ensure they have the technical expertise, resources, and ability to complete projects within the stipulated timeframe.

Dr. Antwi noted that ensuring value for money should be the top priority, warning that awarding contracts without due diligence could undermine the objectives of the programme.

He further called on government to remain neutral and fair in its decisions, insisting that contract awards should be based on merit and capability, not political party affiliations.
