Former Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Leanier Addy, has criticised the tenure of former Black Queens head coach Nora Häuptle, describing her as “overhyped.”

Her remarks come in the wake of the Black Queens’ impressive performance at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where Ghana reached the semi-finals.

Häuptle, who took charge of the team in 2023 after replacing Mercy Tagoe, parted ways with the GFA in January 2025 following the expiration of her contract. She was later appointed head coach of Zambia’s national women’s team, but her side exited the tournament after a heavy 5-0 quarter-final defeat to Nigeria.

In contrast, Ghana, now under the leadership of Swedish coach Kim Lars Björkegren, advanced to the semi-finals but lost to host nation Morocco in a 4-2 penalty shootout after a goalless draw.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Addy questioned the praise previously heaped on Häuptle.

“We overhyped Nora Häuptle,” she said. “If you check Nora’s credentials and those of other Ghanaian coaches who have handled the national team, they were far ahead of her.”

She also called for greater support for the current coach.

“We should give this coach [Björkegren] more time with the team and arrange more friendly matches for the ladies. I am pleading with the Ministry for more international friendlies.”

The Black Queens will face South Africa in the third-place playoff on Friday, July 25.
