The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has announced plans to revoke the licences of 50 large-scale mining companies found to have breached key regulatory requirements.

The decision comes after a comprehensive review of large-scale mining operations by a special committee tasked with assessing compliance in the sector.

In a statement posted on the Ministry’s official Facebook page on Tuesday, December 23, the committee revealed that the first batch of affected companies had been identified following preliminary findings that uncovered serious violations.

These included firms operating with mining leases but lacking valid permits from the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and the Water Resources Commission (WRC).

Acting on the directive of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the committee said licence revocations would be carried out strictly in accordance with existing laws and regulations.

“The Ministry will not hesitate to apply the full rigour of the law to sanitise the sector and ensure that mining activities are conducted responsibly,” the statement said.

The Ministry explained that this action forms part of a broader government strategy to tackle illegalities and regulatory abuses in the mining sector, and further updates will be provided as the review progresses.

It stressed that adherence to environmental and water-use regulations remains mandatory for all mining operators.
