Lands Minister to meet Coalition Against Galamsey

-

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, is expected to meet the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

A leading member of the coalition, Professor Mamudu Akudugu, disclosed this on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, as calls for urgent government action against galamsey intensify.

The National President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) explained that the meeting follows a formal request made by GCAG for an engagement with President John Mahama.

However, the President referred the matter to Mr. Kofi-Buah.

Prof. Akudugu noted that the coalition will use the meeting to reaffirm its demand for the government to fulfil its promises and intensify efforts to end illegal and irresponsible mining.

Key among the coalition’s demands, he said, will be for the government to revoke Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which permits mining in forest reserves.

“For us as a coalition, our demand is for the L.I. to be repealed, and we stand by it—whether it has been amended or not. As long as it has not been revoked, we believe that it cannot fight galamsey head-on.

“We have gathered further evidence and wanted to present it to the President, but he has asked that we engage the sector minister. So the meeting will come off in two days,” he stated.

He also reiterated the coalition’s renewed call for a state of emergency to be declared in illegal mining zones.
