Barca, having successfully dethroned Real Madrid as champions of the Spanish top flight, will close out their league season away to Athletic at San Mames Stadium. The Blaugrana will be in a celebratory mood and looking to embrace their title triumph, having enjoyed a fantastic season under manager Hansi Flick.
“It’s what I’ve said before. They [the Barcelona players] have to enjoy themselves,” said Flick. “I don’t want to put pressure on my players; they have to enjoy themselves. I want them to be well connected, to complement each other well, and to play with a fantastic style.”
Indeed, that attacking style has been a hallmark of Barca this season, underpinned by players such as Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.
Real Madrid will conclude their season at home to Real Sociedad. Los Blancos will be licking their wounds, as although they won both the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup, the failure to defend their La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles is a major disappointment.
Nonetheless, Real’s players will be hungry to put on a good show in what is set to be manager Carlo Ancelotti’s last match in charge, as he prepares to take up the reins of Brazil’s national team.
Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid will be away to Girona at the Montilivi Municipal Stadium. Los Rojiblancos have once again fallen into the shadows cast by Real Madrid and Barcelona, though manager Diego Simeone believes his team will have the chance to shine in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
“We’ve earned on our own merits competing with Barca and Madrid, which is the Club World Cup, no small feat for all this work over 14 years,” said the long-serving Argentine tactician.
“[The Club World Cup] will be new and will generate real enthusiasm in all the teams that participate.”
Other matches to watch out for in this final round include Real Betis hosting Valencia at the Benito Villamarin Stadium, and Sevilla visiting Villarreal at the Ceramica Stadium.
