Kwesi Nyantakyi urges GFA, Clubs to share security costs to tackle hooliganism

Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has called on both the GFA and local football clubs to take joint responsibility for ensuring adequate security at match venues to combat rising hooliganism.

Speaking to Joy Sports in a documentary titled ‘Scars of Hooliganism’, Nyantakyi expressed concern about the growing threat of violence at football matches. He warned that the lack of proper security not only endangers lives but also tarnishes the image of the sport, leading to lower fan attendance and reduced sponsorship.

“Lack of security is violence, and that can lead to loss of lives, property, injury, etc,” he said.

Nyantakyi proposed that clubs be required to contribute a minimum fee to support security operations on matchdays, especially given the travel and logistical expenses incurred by security personnel such as police and military officers.

“The GFA must consider clubs contributing a certain minimum amount to bear the cost of security,” he said.
“When police, soldiers, or whoever are deployed as security personnel, some travel from faraway places and will incur costs.”

He believes that a joint effort in funding security measures would help restore discipline and enhance the matchday experience for fans, players, and officials alike.
