The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyeman, has announced that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) will begin a major decongestion exercise across the city today, Monday, May 5, 2025.
The operation, aimed at reclaiming public spaces, will involve the demolition of unauthorized structures and the removal of goods displayed on pavements.
Addressing journalists in Kumasi, the mayor said the exercise would begin at key hotspots including the Kejetia Roundabout—popularly known as the Otumfuo Roundabout—and the Adehyeman area near the Kumasi Zoo.
“We will ensure that everyone occupying those spaces is removed. Any metallic object placed on the street will be cleared,” he warned.
Mr. Agyeman stressed that the Assembly has already issued sufficient notices and will no longer tolerate the illegal occupation of public walkways.
“I will not make any more announcements. Everyone knows we will not entertain them there,” he affirmed.
This move forms part of the Mayor’s broader commitment to restoring order in the central business district.
Upon assuming office, he had warned traders operating on pavements to vacate or face sanctions, including corporal punishment.
He noted that previous strategies—such as arresting traders and seizing goods—had failed to produce lasting results, with traders repeatedly returning to restricted areas.
“These acts of indiscipline are worsening congestion in the city and must be addressed decisively,” he added.
