The Ghana Police Service has temporarily shut down the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region and withdrawn its personnel following a violent attack by some irate youth.
In a statement, the Eastern Regional Police Command reported that the unrest erupted on Sunday, September 21, 2025, after the death of a suspect, Bright Kena, popularly known as D-ball.
Kena had been arrested for unlawful entry and theft and was receiving treatment at the Kukurantumi Community Hospital prior to his death.
Enraged by the incident, the youth stormed the police station and barracks, hurling stones, sticks, and other weapons at officers. They also attempted to set the facility on fire.
A reinforcement team was quickly deployed to restore calm and prevent further escalation.
Regional police officials say they have met with the family of the deceased and community leaders, assuring them of a transparent and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kena’s death.
The Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department have opened a formal inquiry, with video footage of the attack currently under review.
Authorities have vowed to identify, arrest, and prosecute all those involved in the violence and urged residents to seek peaceful and lawful avenues to address grievances rather than resorting to attacks on security agencies.
