Barimah Owusu Frimpong, the Adonteng Mmratohene of Akyem Kukurantumi, has confirmed reports that the suspect whose death triggered violent protests in the town was brutally beaten and dragged on the ground before being taken to the hospital.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday, the chief said the deceased, Bright, popularly known as D-ball, allegedly stabbed a community police assistant in the hand during his arrest.
He was later overpowered, but instead of being taken into custody peacefully, he was subjected to what he described as a merciless beating.
According to Barimah Frimpong, Bright was arrested by the station officer, whose name he only gave as Kumador, and two community police assistants.
“They beat him mercilessly. He was weak, and they held his hand and dragged him on the ground. When he died in the hospital, he was still in handcuffs,” Barimah Owusu Frimpong revealed.
He expressed sadness over the incident, noting that such a violent episode was unprecedented in Kukurantumi.
“I have never witnessed such an incident in Kukurantumi before. I believe it was a result of an adrenaline rush,” he said.
However, the chief appealed to the angry youth to remain calm and allow the authorities to conduct a full investigation.
“We should trust the police to do their work and ensure justice is served. Taking the law into our own hands may harm innocent people,” he cautioned.
Barimah Frimpong also assured residents that traditional leaders will work closely with security agencies to maintain order and prevent a repeat of Sunday’s chaos.
Meanwhile, the Kukurantumi Police Station has been shut down, and personnel have been withdrawn from the community following the violent attack.
