Kufuor mourns helicopter crash victims, calls for national unity

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed profound grief over the passing of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others who lost their lives in Wednesday’s military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

In a statement released after the incident, the former President said he shares in the nation’s sorrow and extended his heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims who perished while serving the nation.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, and colleagues of all those who perished in this tragic incident,” he said.

He urged the nation to honour the memory of the departed through renewed compassion, solidarity, and a deepened commitment to national service.

“May God comfort the entire nation, especially the bereaved families, the President of the Republic, and all Ghanaians,” he added.

The crash, which claimed the lives of key government officials and military officers, has been widely described as a national tragedy. In honour of the victims, flags are flying at half-mast across the country as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.

The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and are undergoing forensic examination and identification.

The confirmed list of casualties includes:

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence

  • Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed – MP for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation

  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman, National Democratic Congress (NDC)

  • Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary Candidate

  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala – Ghana Air Force

  • Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu – Ghana Air Force

  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah – Ghana Air Force

The list was verified by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, who described the loss as one of the most painful in the country’s recent history.
