Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has expressed surprise over Mohammed Kudus’ imminent move to Tottenham Hotspur, stating he had expected the talented midfielder to land at a “bigger club” like Chelsea.
Kudus, 24, is reportedly close to completing a £55 million transfer from West Ham United to Spurs, with a five-year contract on the table.
Although the North London side ultimately secured his signature, the Ghanaian star had previously been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Speaking to Sporty FM, Kingston acknowledged that the switch represents upward mobility in Kudus’ career—but believes the former Ajax playmaker could have aimed higher.
“Mohammed Kudus moving from West Ham to Tottenham is one step in his career,” he said.
“But I was expecting him to move to a bigger club like Chelsea.”
If the deal is finalized, Kudus will become Ghana’s most expensive footballer, surpassing the €55 million Arsenal paid for Thomas Partey in 2020.
Kudus is expected to play a key role for Tottenham as they return to the UEFA Champions League next season—a competition he previously featured in during his spell at Dutch side Ajax.
