The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Krachi West Municipality in the Oti Region, Prosper Addo, has urged the youth to avoid illicit drugs and uphold discipline to secure a better future for themselves.
During a gathering of young people at the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion Project (SOCO) inter-cluster soccer championship, the MCE emphasized the harmful effects of drug abuse on individuals and society as a whole.
He noted that engaging in illicit drug use not only jeopardizes the health and future of young people but also contributes to rising crime rates and social disintegration.
The event, which took place at the Henkle School Park, brought together participants from the Nkyenekyene, Kpollo, Odomakoma, and Kete clusters.
Prosper Addo highlighted the role of community events like the inter-cluster championship in fostering a sense of belonging among the youth.
According to him, without peace and stability, much-needed development cannot be achieved.
He commended the efforts of the SOCO project for its instrumental support in providing resources for the municipality’s development.
The MCE also called for the establishment of recreational facilities, such as an astroturf sports field, to offer youth safe spaces for physical activity and social interaction.
“Investing in our youth means giving them opportunities to engage in positive activities that promote their well-being,” he stated.
Additionally, Superintendent Philip Kwadwo Harmond, the Kete-Krachi Municipal Police Commander, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the role of the youth as future leaders and change-makers.
He pointed out the concerning rise in drug-related issues among young people, which has become a pressing national issue.
The police commander praised SOCO for such initiatives that actively engage and equip the youth with the knowledge and skills necessary to make positive life choices.
He encouraged the youth to participate in recreational activities, sports, and community service as healthy alternatives to drug use.
