Residents of Kraboa–Coaltar in the Eastern Region are demanding an immediate and independent investigation into what they describe as a persistent pattern of injustice and police inaction following two violent incidents in the area.
The group, known as the Concerned People of Kraboa–Coaltar, has petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS), and the Office of the President to intervene urgently.
According to a statement issued by the group, a shooting incident in January 2025 claimed several lives and left others injured. Eyewitnesses allege that a destooled traditional leader, Barima Okekremesi Asiedu II, and his associates were behind the attack.
Despite these claims, residents say the prime suspect remains free, alleging that the Ayensuano District Police Commander, DSP Nartey, is aware of his whereabouts but has taken no action.
Tensions in the community intensified after another incident on October 4, 2025, when a resident, Tetteh David Parry, was allegedly wrongfully arrested at a funeral in Coaltar for possessing a firearm, a claim locals insist was fabricated to divert attention from the unresolved January killings.
“The police claim some community boys brought the alleged firearm to them. We are calling for their arrest and an independent forensic analysis of the weapon to determine who actually handled it,” the group’s statement said.
The residents are demanding a joint probe by CHRAJ, PIPS, and the Ministry of National Security into both incidents; suspension of the Ayensuano District Police Commander and Crime Officer, and forensic testing of the disputed firearm.
They also want witness protection and a public release of the investigation’s findings to help restore confidence in the Ghana Police Service.
“Our actions are peaceful, lawful, and grounded in our constitutional right to seek justice and protection from abuse of authority,” the group stated, warning that failure to act within 14 days will compel them to pursue civil and legal remedies and attract national and international attention to their plight.
