The Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has called on the Speaker of Parliament to issue a ruling nullifying a letter Parliament hastily sent to the Electoral Commission (EC) declaring the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant.

According to him, the Supreme Court’s decision to suspend the planned rerun in the constituency underscores the fact that Parliament acted prematurely in communicating the vacancy to the EC.

Oppong Nkrumah argued that the declaration of a vacant seat was made at a time when court applications relating to the matter had already been served on Parliament, creating what he described as an avoidable constitutional puzzle.

He stressed that the confusion surrounding the Kpandai constituency and its parliamentary representation must be resolved, insisting that only the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has the authority to correct the situation by ruling the letter void.

The Ofoase-Ayirebi MP further suggested that the Kpandai MP, Matthew Nyindam, should formally apply to the Speaker for a waiver of the declaration.

On the broader implications, Oppong Nkrumah warned that any attempt to force a rerun or “snatch” parliamentary seats without a firm legal basis could trigger chaos and set a dangerous precedent, urging Parliament and government to proceed with caution.
