The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has heaped praise on Black Stars head coach Otto Addo following Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After the disappointment of missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) — the first time in over two decades Addo led the team to redemption by steering the Black Stars to the global stage, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico next year.
Ghana topped Group I with 25 points to secure their place at the tournament.
Speaking after the qualification was confirmed, Mr Adams commended the former Borussia Dortmund talent coach for his resilience and success, adding that Addo had embraced the tag of being a ‘lucky coach’.
“He’s done his bit, he’s done well, and we give him credit. Despite the criticism of some of his decisions, which I share sometimes, he’s come through as a coach who has been quite lucky,” he told Citi FM.
“Even Otto Addo himself, he wasn’t happy that I described his situation as…. as lucky,” Kofi Adams added.
Otto Addo has now etched his name into Ghana’s football history as the first coach to qualify the Black Stars for back-to-back World Cups, having also guided the team to Qatar 2022 during his first stint in charge.
Ghana will find out their group-stage opponents for the 2026 World Cup on December 5.
