KNUST student jailed 10 years for robbing hairdresser

A 25-year-old Level 200 student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Fatawu Amponsah, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbery by the Asante Akropong Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District.

The student, who also works as a driver’s mate, pleaded guilty and was convicted on his own plea by presiding judge Gloria Mensah Bonsu.

According to Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu, who prosecuted the case, the incident occurred on June 16, 2025, around 2:30 a.m. The victim, Juliet Nyarko, a hairdresser apprentice at Abuakwa-Asenemaso, was returning home when she was attacked.

Fatawu trailed Juliet to a quiet section of the road and demanded her iPhone 11, valued at GH₵3,000. When she refused, he pulled out a kitchen knife, assaulted her, and forcefully took the phone before fleeing.

Her screams drew the attention of community members who gave chase, apprehended the suspect, and handed him over to the Abuakwa Police.

In his caution statement, Fatawu admitted to the crime. After further investigation, he was charged and subsequently jailed.
