KNUST Obuasi campus appeals for buses, e-learning centre

The Obuasi campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is grappling with infrastructure challenges that continue to hamper effective teaching and learning.

Coordinating Dean of the campus, Prof. Lawrence Darkwah, has called on stakeholders, corporate institutions, and well-wishers to come to the aid of the university, noting that students and faculty are enduring difficulties that could affect academic output.

He revealed that the campus does not have buses to transport students for practical training at hospitals, a challenge that continues to frustrate clinical sessions and other field exercises.

Additionally, the lack of adequate classroom space and the absence of an e-learning centre have left students struggling to fully benefit from modern teaching methods.

Prof. Darkwah made the appeal when AngloGold Ashanti presented a cheque of GH¢732,309 to support infrastructure development at the campus.

“This support from AngloGold Ashanti is timely, but much more is needed. Our vision is to create a world-class learning environment at Obuasi, and we are calling on partners to help us bridge the infrastructure gap.”

Mr. Mershack Baah, Director of Human Resources at AngloGold Ashanti, explained that the company’s support formed part of its commitment to education and community development.

He said the funds were expected to help the university acquire essential facilities that would ease the strain on students and faculty.

Since its establishment, the Obuasi campus has played a key role in expanding access to higher education for students in the Ashanti and surrounding regions.

However, administrators say unless pressing infrastructural needs are addressed, the campus risks stalling its progress in delivering quality tertiary education.
