The Registrar of Births and Deaths, Samuel Adom Botchway, has outlined the current charges for the registration of births and deaths in Ghana, explaining that while early registration remains free, late registrations attract specific fees based on age categories.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Botchway urged parents and guardians to register their children within the first year of birth to avoid paying late registration charges.
“For children aged 0 to 12 months, registration is completely free,” he said. “However, once a child is older than one year, the process becomes late registration.”
He explained that the registry categorises late registration into two brackets: children aged between one and five years pay GH¢13, while individuals above five years are required to pay GH¢25.
According to him, all payments are made electronically through the Ghana.gov platform.
“You simply go to the Ghana.gov app, select the type of registration you are applying for, make the payment, and you will receive a receipt, which is then used for printing the certificate,” he clarified.
Touching on the registration of deaths, Mr. Botchway noted that registering a death within ten days of its occurrence is free of charge. However, after the tenth day, a fee applies.
He encouraged Ghanaians to comply with the timelines for both birth and death registrations, stressing that timely registration not only reduces costs but also ensures accurate national data collection for planning and development.
