Knii Lante says it is masochistic to refer to God as ‘He’, insists God is neutral

Ghanaian musician and medical doctor, Knii Lante, has sparked conversation with his thought-provoking take on how God is addressed, arguing that the divine being should not be limited to the pronoun “He.”

Speaking in a recent interview on Hitz FM, the Baby Take Good Care hitmaker explained that traditional African beliefs offer a more inclusive perspective—seeing the Supreme Being as embodying both masculine and feminine qualities.

“You know, our concept of God is Ata (father) and Naa (mother). So our understanding of God is either neutral or represents both,” he said.

Knii Lante questioned the tendency, especially in biblical translations, to consistently refer to God as “He.”

“In the Bible, it’s always ‘He created…’—never ‘She.’ But God is a spirit. God doesn’t have testis; God doesn’t have a vagina. So why, on what basis, do we refer to God as a ‘he’? This is just masochism,” he argued.

The award-winning artiste suggested that African cultures may, in fact, hold a deeper and more balanced understanding of the divine than some of those who historically introduced Christianity to the continent.

When asked about his own faith, Knii Lante responded with a smile, “Me, I’m a Christian.”

His comments have ignited online debate, with some praising his perspective as enlightening, while others remain firmly rooted in the traditional biblical view.
