The Member of Parliament for Kintampo North, Joseph Kwame Kuma, has donated GH¢60,600 to the National Ambulance Service (NAS) to support the repair and restoration of an ambulance serving the constituency.
The donation was made during a visit to the NAS Headquarters in Accra, where the MP appealed to the Service to use the funds to procure a new engine, install an air-conditioning system and undertake other critical maintenance works on the ambulance, which has been out of operation for the past three months.
Mr Kuma said the intervention was driven by concerns over the difficulties faced by residents, particularly victims of road crashes along the Kintampo North corridor, in accessing timely emergency medical assistance.
He noted that road traffic incidents along the stretch have often highlighted the importance of having a functional ambulance service readily available to transport victims and provide critical pre-hospital care.
The MP said his support for the National Ambulance Service has been consistent throughout his six years in Parliament, adding that he has made several interventions aimed at improving emergency healthcare delivery in the constituency.
He also urged other Members of Parliament, corporate institutions and stakeholders to support the NAS in restoring non-operational ambulances and strengthening emergency response nationwide.
Receiving the donation on behalf of Management, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Ambulance Service, Dr. George Kojo Owusu, expressed appreciation to Hon. Kuma for his continued support.
He assured that the funds would be used for the intended purpose, including the procurement of the required engine, installation of the air-conditioning system and completion of all necessary repairs to return the ambulance to service.
Dr. Owusu also appealed to non-governmental organisations, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, corporate bodies and other partners to support the Service with resources to rehabilitate ambulances currently out of operation.
According to him, such interventions are crucial to improving emergency response times and expanding access to quality pre-hospital care across the country.
He further disclosed that the Service is preparing to introduce an in-service training programme for Emergency Medical Technicians, focusing on patient stabilisation and effective emergency interventions before patients arrive at health facilities.
The initiative, he said, would strengthen the skills of EMTs and improve the quality of emergency care delivered during ambulance operations.
