New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong has come under scrutiny after launching a series of attacks on former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia over a comment he mistakenly believed was made by him.

Video footage from the event, however, shows that the remark which triggered Mr Agyapong’s reaction actually came from the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking to party delegates in the Ashanti Region, Chairman Wontumi said the NPP has generally retained its first-time presidential candidates, with the exception of Professor Albert Adu Boahen.

He explained that Prof. Adu Boahen was not retained for the 1996 election after contesting in 1992 due to health challenges, a position documented in a book by Apenten Appiah-Menka, a close associate of the late professor.

Despite this clarification, Kennedy Agyapong publicly attributed the statement to Dr Bawumia and criticised him sharply.

“I have never seen a liar like our former flagbearer before. This man is a liar for saying that Adu Boahen did not contest because he was sick,” Agyapong said, mistakenly linking Chairman Wontumi’s comments to Dr Bawumia.

The outburst has sparked widespread debate online, with several social media users questioning why Mr Agyapong would direct such attacks at Dr Bawumia over a statement he did not make. Others described the comments as unnecessary and misleading.
