The Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly has stopped the landlord of a collapsed building at Kasoa from rebuilding the structure until ongoing investigations are completed.
The directive was issued by the Municipal Engineer, Isaac Ofori, after a team of engineers from the assembly visited the site following the weekend collapse, which left a mason injured and hospitalized at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
According to Mr. Ofori, preliminary findings revealed that the landlord failed to engage qualified builders and also used substandard materials during renovation works, which contributed to the incident.
“Our initial investigation shows that the owner did not use professionals or the right construction materials. Until investigations are concluded, we have stopped him from rebuilding,” he stated in an interview with Adom News.
Mr. Ofori further appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Local Government to provide logistics, particularly vehicles, to support assembly works departments in conducting regular inspections and enforcing building regulations to prevent future disasters.
“If we had enough vehicles and resources, we could strengthen our monitoring efforts and prevent such avoidable incidents,” he added.
The assembly has assured residents that it will continue to monitor all construction activities in the municipality to ensure adherence to safety standards.
