A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Poku, has weighed in on the recent surge in fuel prices, attributing the situation to both global factors and what he describes as political double standards.
Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews, he noted that fuel prices remain high and could rise further if ongoing global tensions persist.
According to him, some oil marketing companies initially increased prices but have since made slight reductions, which he acknowledged as a positive development.
However, he criticised what he described as unnecessary political rhetoric surrounding the issue.
“Karma is real; as if by God’s intervention to show them that all the things they said in opposition, they will now face and see how they treat them,” he said, referring to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He recalled how the previous administration under the NPP faced challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine War, during which the then-opposition was vocal about solutions.
Mr. Poku questioned why the current government, now in power, is unable to address similar challenges effectively, as Ghanaians continue to feel the impact of rising fuel prices.
He further explained that mechanisms like the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy could be used to cushion consumers, but noted that restrictions under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme limit the government’s ability to implement such relief measures.
