Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has taken his first official steps toward fulfilling one of his most talked-about campaign promises: ending the burden of long rent advance demands on tenants.
Dumelo, who made housing reform a key part of his platform during the 2024 general elections, has confirmed that engagements with the Ministry responsible for Housing have already begun.
His goal is to push for the full enforcement of Ghana’s Rent Control Act, which legally permits landlords to demand a maximum of only six months’ rent advance.
However, the law has long been ignored, with many tenants still forced to pay up to two years’ rent upfront.
In a post reaffirming his commitment, Dumelo wrote, “I remember making this statement and it’s being worked on. Engagements with the ministry responsible for housing have commenced, and in due time, I will update folks on progress.”
Now in office, Dumelo is turning those words into action, promising to keep the public updated as discussions with the Ministry advance.
His renewed effort has sparked fresh hope among many Ghanaians, particularly young people, students, and low-income earners who continue to be burdened by high and illegal rent demands.
Dumelo’s initiative comes at a time when housing affordability remains a pressing issue in urban Ghana.
