Legal counsel for Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Samuel Atta Akyea, has taken on the Attorney General over his client’s seven-day remand into EOCO’s custody.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the former Abuakwa South MP described the move as a clear case of “tit for tat” following a defamation suit filed against the Attorney General.
“I believe this is a tit for tat because some people now believe the Attorney General is licensed to defend people and then we afterwards sing Hallelujah chorus for him,” he stated.
The Accra High Court on Friday, May 2, 2025, remanded Adu-Boahene in EOCO custody to allow the Attorney General’s office time to complete witness statements.
The case has been adjourned to May 13 for further directions.
However, Atta Akyea accused the prosecution of employing delay tactics and acting in bad faith.
“Do you expect someone to glorify you for defaming them? He even mentioned it at his press conference that Adu-Boahene has sued him and yet he continued to defame him,” he said.
Embattled Adu-Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, on April 24, 2025, filed a defamation suit against the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine.
According to the plaintiffs, Dr. Ayine fabricated a false narrative alleging that they had fraudulently used a corporate account to siphon state funds for personal use.
They are seeking exemplary and punitive damages for what they describe as highly offensive and defamatory statements made by the Attorney General during a press conference held on March 24, 2025.
In addition to damages, the plaintiffs are requesting a perpetual injunction to restrain Dr. Ayine from making or facilitating any further publication or broadcast of similar defamatory content.
Following the suit, Dr. Ayine formally charged the couple with corruption-related offences amounting to several millions of cedis.
Alongside two others – Mildred Donkor and Advantage Solutions Limited – they face 11 counts, including stealing, money laundering, defrauding by false pretences, and wilfully causing financial loss.
Meanwhile, Mr. Atta Akyea has said Dr. Ayine is yet to enter an appearance in the defamation suit although the timeline has elapsed.
“The time is moving and I will advise myself accordingly,” he added.
