President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has urged the government to honour the Black Queens for their impressive showing at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they clinched a bronze medal.
The Queens, led by head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, arrived in Accra on Monday morning to a warm reception at the Kotoka International Airport following their third-place finish in Morocco.
Addressing the media upon their arrival, Mr Okraku called for a tangible show of appreciation for the team’s efforts.
“This is the time for us to reward them,” he said.
“Yes, they desired to bring the trophy home, but they have proven that they are on the right path.”
The 2024 tournament marks Ghana’s best WAFCON finish in nearly 20 years and a significant milestone in the Black Queens’ rebuilding journey.
After a shaky start with a 2-0 defeat to South Africa, the Queens bounced back to draw with Mali and secured a vital win over Tanzania to progress from the group stage.
They then edged Algeria in the quarter-finals before falling to eventual finalists Morocco in the semi-finals.
Ghana sealed third place with a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over South Africa in the playoff.
