Lawyer for Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Samuel Atta Akyea, has explained that his client has decided to turn himself in to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to prevent the possible misuse of a court warrant.
Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam, Mr Atta Akyea said the decision was not driven by fear.
“He has decided to turn himself in not because he is afraid; we’re wise people. But it is because people can misuse and abuse a court warrant,” he stated.
The lawyer noted that a warrant could be executed at any time, including odd hours.
“You can be in your house at midnight, and security officials may come to arrest or search you. So whatever they are seeking, he wants to go there and know what the issue is,” he said.
Mr Atta Akyea emphasised that the MP was presenting himself voluntarily.
“He has not been handcuffed or anything. He has decided to go on his own,” he added.
He called for the process to be handled without unnecessary showmanship and for the law to be allowed to work.
“We expect that there is no showmanship, but the law is allowed to work. He is an MP and will not run away from this country. He knows he will lose his seat if he goes away. He shouldn’t be treated as a common criminal,” Mr Atta Akyea stressed.
